Prof. Andrea Paolella

(Ph.D. 2013, https://unimore.unifind.cineca.it/get/person/120737) held positions at McGill University (Montreal, Canada) and Hydro-Québec (Varenens, Canada) before becoming a Senior Scientist at the Austrian Institute of Technology (Vienna, Austria, 2022) and an Associate Professor at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (Modena, Italy, 2023). His research focuses on anode-free configurations, solid electrolytes, and solid-state batteries. Most importantly, he is the father of four children.



Graduated students

Dr. Biagio Anderlini

Biagio Anderlini is a Postdoctoral Researcher (Ph.D., 2025) at the Department of Chemical and Geological Sciences, University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. His expertise lies in organic synthesis and coordination chemistry, with research activities focused on the development of advanced electrolyte systems for electrochemical energy storage, ranging from conventional liquid electrolytes to single-ion technologies. He is currently involved in the European Horizon project “Sustainable European sodium-ion batteries for stationary applications featuring improved PRocesses, Inherently safe and Non-Toxic materials” (SPRINT).


Ph.D students

Nassima Yamini

Nassima Yamini is a PhD student in Chemistry at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, working in collaboration with the Spanish company BasqueVolt. Her research focuses on the development of innovative current collectors to improve the performance and stability of anode-free lithium-metal batteries, with the aim of enabling next-generation high-energy-density battery technologies.


Manuele Rossi

Manuele Rossi is a Ph.D student working in collaboration with NOVAC srl. His current research focuses on the development of innovative and sustainable materials and processing strategies for next-generation lithium metal batteries, with particular emphasis on scalable manufacturing, sustainable processing of Ni-rich cathode materials, solid-state and hybrid electrolytes, electrochemical interfaces, and advanced characterization


Joel Jambalos

Joel Jambalos is a Marie Curie-Skłodowska Actions (MSCA) Doctoral Researcher in Novac s.r.l and University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (UniMoRe) under the INCEPTION project funded by the European Union Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Programme. His research focuses on the electrochemical study and scale-up of zinc metal anode for hybrid battery and supercapacitor devices using Novac’s universal current collector (UCC)

Dr. Fabizio Bernini (PostDoc @ Department of Engineering Enzo Ferrari -Unimore)

Fabrizio Bernini is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Department of Engineering “Enzo Ferrari” (University of Modena and Reggio Emilia). His research activities focus on battery technologies, electrode manufacturing and process characterization, including sensor-based monitoring and Digital Twin approaches. He is also involved in the feasibility study for the development of an International Centre for Battery Technologies, Energy Storage and Electrification.
